ZEISS Empowers Researchers With AI-Powered Digital Microscopy Solutions

ZEISS, a leading technology enterprise providing optical systems and optoelectronics, is increasingly expanding its range of digital solutions. It sought a long-term IT partner to support the build-out of its research microscopy solutions, advancing microscopy image processing platforms and leveraging AI.

We provide ongoing support to ZEISS Microscopy as it continuously advances its software solutions, incorporating AI and increasing automation to meet growing customer expectations. Through our consistent high-quality delivery and deep technology expertise we have built a successful long-term collaboration.

ZEISS Microscopy covers the entire spectrum of microscopy with light, electron and X-ray microscopes along with software solutions and comprehensive service offerings. The products are used in life sciences and materials research while its software solutions help researchers get from images to results.  

However, microscopy users are now increasingly looking for full-application solutions with needs extending beyond acquiring and formatting high-quality images. Customers expect complete end-to-end workflows including instrument control, analysis and automation functionalities. To address this, ZEISS is investing in new software functionalities and advanced technologies such as AI to overcome imaging challenges in new and innovative ways.  
ZEISS sought a partner that could augment its teams with highly skilled engineers who can navigate high levels of product complexity and quickly adapt to distributed teams. For this, it turned to Endava.  

Combined expertise for a long-standing collaboration

ZEISS sought our expertise to fuel two main projects: 

  • Advancing the key functionalities of its ZEN software, the universal software for microscopy users, including automated image processing, enhanced particle analysis, large data management, platform framework development and DevOps. 
  • Supporting the development of the cloud-based platform ZEISS arivis Cloud, which enables users to train and run AI models for image segmentation and analysis without coding. These models can also be imported and integrated into image analysis workflows in ZEISS arivis Pro and ZEN.  

Our developers’ multi-disciplinary expertise allowed us to quickly adapt to ZEISS requirements despite the highly complex nature of the field of microscopy. Offering AI technical expertise, we supported the development of deep learning algorithms and AI-based workflows and helped accelerate product development. Meanwhile, our methods and consistency have allowed us to turn an initial collaboration into a long-standing partnership. 

 

Over the years of collaboration, we’ve gained relevant experience to support additional teams such as the ZEISS Solutions Lab. This team provides customer-specific software and automation solutions to microscopy customers ranging from specific instrument automation, customised analysis, measurement and reporting. Typically, these solutions consist of special functionality, which is not available in the existing software.
