Challenge

A global leader in life sciences, diagnostics and applied markets sought to make several enhancements to its legacy core systems but needed additional capacity to achieve the improvements.

Outcome

With support from Endava, the firm was able to optimise its core systems, enhancing its performance and introducing new features.

A leading life sciences and diagnostics firm produces measurements technologies that serve customers in life sciences and applied tools, cross lab and diagnostics and genomics. With operations around the world, it supports customers in 110 countries, with teams spread across the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

The organisation sought to establish additional scrum teams to work on a product backlog of the legacy core at the heart of the client’s ecosystem. The goal was to achieve the capacity to introduce innovation in the legacy system.

Collaborating for expertise

From the inception of the project, we supported with a tailored, augmented delivery team including development, testing and DevOps experts. Working with their product owners, architects and QA leadership, our flexible team included around 50 engineers across seven projects, supported by two Project Managers.

In close collaboration with the customer’s teams, we were able to ensure smooth integration and communication across time zones.

Throughout the eight-year partnership, the team’s structure was adapted to suit evolving project needs, making sure the correct technical and domain knowledge was available. We worked to quickly understand the legacy and integrated systems, meaning the team could operate independently, ensuring new members were onboarded efficiently.

We find that the key to success, and a common denominator of our partnership, is good communication and a thorough understanding of the common goals we strive to achieve.”

Optimising systems for success

During one project, a team of eight engineers significantly accelerated the transition from old Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services to the new REST API, a more modern, lightweight architecture. This allowed our client to focus on different tasks more suited to its preferences, enabling us in turn to deliver tasks and functionalities faster and with greater quality.

This work empowered the organisation to tackle its product backlog across its legacy core systems. Some key factors of our successful partnership included:

  • Scalability: Working closely with the customer, we were able to expand our team in response to its growing demands, while navigating the intricacies and expertise of the life science sector.
  • Cross-regional collaboration: With teams positioned closely to the client’s key locations, our engineers could maintain effective coordination across time zones.
  • Innovation and independence: By providing deep domain expertise, we were able to act more independently, introduce innovative solutions and streamline the onboarding of new members.

This continuing partnership of agile collaboration enables the client to serve its customers across the life sciences and diagnostics sector.
