Laying the Foundation for Scalable Digital Banking With DSK Bank

Challenge

DSK Bank’s legacy digital infrastructure was beginning to show its limits – making it harder to innovate at speed, creating fragmented customer journeys, and increasing reliance on manual support. To stay ahead in a fast-evolving market, the bank needed a modern, flexible platform to streamline digital experiences, accelerate delivery, and support secure, scalable growth.

Outcome

DSK Bank now operates one of the region’s most advanced digital banking platforms, with agile release trains, digital onboarding and scalable architecture supporting faster time-to-market and better customer experiences.

As the first commercial bank in Bulgaria, dating back to 1951, DSK Bank recognised the need to evolve. While reliable, its legacy systems – built on monolithic architecture – were holding back its digital ambitions. Deployment cycles were slow, service automation was limited, and customer expectations were rising.  

 

With a clear goal to lead in digital banking and serve millions through seamless omnichannel services, DSK initiated a bold internal transformation and partnered with Endava to support the journey.

A strategic shift in technology and mindset

At the core of the transformation was the adoption of the Backbase Engagement Banking Platform. DSK led the strategic shift from monolithic systems to a modular, microservices-based architecture – enabling the bank to scale, iterate, and respond to change more effectively.  

 

Together, we:   

  • Modernised the core platform using microservices-based architecture for modularity and scalability.   
  • Redesigned UX journeys for international payments, P2P transfers, FX and onboarding, blending DSK’s market knowledge with our deep UX and fintech expertise.
  • Launched full digital onboarding for both new and existing customers, removing the need for in-branch interactions.  
  • Established agile-at-scale delivery, helping DSK shift from waterfall to SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), complete with Agile Release Trains (ARTs). 
  • Implemented modern DevOps practices such as one-click deployments, test automation and CI/CD pipelines to accelerate releases.

This transformation was not just about technology – it was about enabling a new way of working. Success came from three essential elements:

  • Resilience by design: Critical payment flows were rearchitected with compliance, security, and seamless global operations in mind.

Today, DSK releases new features monthly, cutting time-to-market and enabling rapid iteration based on customer feedback. Manual service volumes have dropped, thanks to intuitive self-serve tools and fully digital onboarding.  

 

Agile Release Trains have aligned cross-functional teams around business goals, increasing delivery velocity and fostering collaboration between IT and business units.  

 

The result: streamlined experiences for payments, transfers, and account management – and an internal delivery model built for continuous evolution. With a future-ready architecture and a mindset shift already underway, DSK is now equipped to scale innovation sustainably and securely.
