Challenge

Data energy provider ElectraLink had ambitions to build an open platform to enable and accelerate participation in the UK’s flexible energy market. It sought an IT partner to help create a single open portal accessible to all accredited market participants.

Outcome

Using a phased approach and flexible architecture, we supported ElectraLink in building a customer-centric platform that acts as a single open system for all accredited market participants, supporting the United Kingdom’s 2050 net zero target.

ElectraLink, a data solutions provider, develops cloud-based networks, APIs, adaptors, energy insight platforms, programmes and projects for a changing energy system.

To support open data access and innovative products in the UK energy market, ElectraLink strived to build an open platform that is accessible to all accredited participants. We partnered with ElectraLink to support its ambitious plans.

Customer-centric approach to creation

During our collaboration, teams worked together using a customer-centred approach. This began with a focused discovery phase to define the product strategy. At this stage, the needs of the various audiences and end users connected to the UK energy market were analysed to identify the optimum features for the platform.

The platform needed to be built with an emphasis on:

  • usability
  • flexibility
  • scalability
  • data collection
  • analysis

The outcome of this discovery phase was a proposal to use a phased approach to building out the platform using a set of innovative components built on capable, client-focused and flexible architectures.

Delivering innovative solutions

Our collaboration led to the completion of a minimum viable product (MVP): a data sharing and standardisation service to coordinate data requirements in the energy flexibility market.

This platform offers extensive representation of generation and electricity network data, enabling electricity distribution organisations and their customers to best plan for power provision using green and renewable sources.

Its scalable architecture allows further integration with third-party tools, while reusable components enable data exposure through smart data visualisation tools and widgets to provide essential market insights.

Recognition and ambition

The platform – which was nominated for the 2022 UX Design Awards – aims to support the UK’s 2050 net zero target by providing a more flexible and responsive system to changing demand and accommodating of variable renewable generation.

“Endava worked closely with ElectraLink in 2020 to produce a first-of-its-kind data discovery and visualisation platform for various organisations in the UK energy market, producing a high-quality product in only 18 weeks.

The Endava team worked skillfully with ElectraLink and its stakeholders to understand complex requirements in an evolving market. This enabled the combined team to optimise the product and effectively manage scope change as new information came to light." – Paul Linnane, Chief Data Officer, ElectraLink
