Eoin Woods, Endava’s CTO, Honoured by the Carnegie Mellon University SEI with the 2018 “Linda M. Northrop” Software Architecture Award

The annual Linda M. Northrop Award for Software Architecture was presented to Eoin Woods, Endava’s CTO, during the 14th Annual SATURN event – the SEI Architecture Technology User Network Conference organised in Plano, Texas between 7-10 May 2018.

This is an annual award offered to an individual or a team who has used software architecture to significantly improve practices, outcomes, or both in an organisation or in the software-development community. Eoin’s practical experience with software engineering, spanning over a period of 20 years, and his long-standing involvement with the software architecture community as an author, editor and speaker made him an ideal nominee for this award.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute has been a pioneering institution in the development of software architecture and its staff have made many seminal contributions to the field, so it is with gratitude and humility that I accept this award. I’d also like to acknowledge the many individuals in the software architecture community, at the SEI and beyond, who have taught me so much and provided so many fruitful collaborations. In particular, I would like to thank Nick Rozanski, my long-time collaborator with whom I co-authored our book ‘Software Systems Architecture’.” – commented Eoin Woods on notification of the award.

During the 2018 SATURN event, Eoin was also part of panel discussion – “Death of the Architect” and presented a conference talk entitled “Software Architecture as Systems Dissolve”, which used the history of software architecture to try to predict what the future might hold for the field.

As Endava’s CTO, Eoin Woods leads the technical strategy for the firm. Before joining Endava, he spent 10 years in the software product industry for Bull, Sybase and InterTrust and 10 years in Capital Markets for BGI, UBS and BlackRock.

A major part of Eoin’s focus at Endava is on working with the company’s delivery organisation to enable the right tools, technologies, and processes to be in place to transform and improve the efficiency of the clients’ platforms. Eoin also provides client-facing technical strategy, assurance and advice.

He is a widely published author in both the research and industrial communities, and is co-author of the well-known book "Software Systems Architecture", published by Addison-Wesley. Eoin is also a regular conference speaker and an active member of the wider software engineering community. His main technical interests are software architecture, distributed systems and computer security.
