The R&A, organiser of The Open Championship, has been working with Endava to provide the new features of TheOpen.com, including:

• Real time scoring on new leaderboard with 3 views – traditional view, over and under view and hole by hole scores
• Tournament player performance stats centre
• Mobile feeds for site scoring apps – used by different mobile devices (Apple, Android etc)
• Course live view - GPS player mapping systems to show player grouping, scores - all overlayed on a course map
  Interactive course guide
• Social media functionality
• @TheOpenRadio & @TheOpenLive (dedicated TV channel exclusively on TheOpen.cm), Live BBC TV and ESPN radio feeds

The key challenge faced in producing The Open Championship website is the timeliness of the project. With over two million users visiting the site on the first day, the architecture is designed from the ground up for stability and security. Rigorous testing at code and hosting level begins months before the event.

The crown jewels of TheOpen.com is the up-to-the-minute live scoring, the website displays live scoring updates during the four day Championship. Scoring data is delivered to Endava after every stroke, and the players’ scorecards are updated within seconds on the website. Running a secure, ring fenced, fully redundant environment is critical to ensure the event runs smoothly.

Endava provides a fully managed hosting platform, which is monitored and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  During the tournament, the Endava technical team provides a bespoke technical service model, providing shift patterns to proactively ensure that the site works without missing a shot.

Endava’s Digital Media division has a strong track record in building sports websites. The major differences between sports websites and other sites is that traffic is erratic, with spikes throughout The Open Championship and deadlines are totally immovable.
